Tornadoes a shipwreck and record temperatures top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the events that happened on May 28.

  • 1860 - The side-wheel wooden steamer Arctic while carrying merchandise and passengers, was driven ashore on the east side of Lighthouse Island in the Huron Islands in Lake Superior in a heavy fog and later destroyed by a gale on the Huron shoals. Passengers and crew were able to make it to shore by small boat before a storm arose and pounded her to pieces. They were later picked up by the steamer Fountain City.

    1969 - The earliest 100° ever in the city of Marquette with a oakley military discount high of 100° with temperatures in the 80s at 730 AM in Marquette, warming to 96° at noon. The heat caused concrete to explode with sections of Highway 41 from Chocolay to Ishpeming needing emergency repairs.     1955 - A series of tornadoes put down an intermittent damage path more than 60 miles long from near Schoolcraft in Kalamazoo County to east of Grand Ledge in Eaton County. One person was injured northwest of Charlotte as a barn was destroyed. Two homes were unroofed and total damage was estimated at 0,000.

    1991 - A tornado damaged homes and destroyed outbuildings near Hart in Oceana County. An F1 tornado spoiled dinner plans for the people of Huron County when it hit at 7:10PM causing roughly 00 in property damage. Two tornadoes touched down at 1230 CST in Menominee County. The first tornado moved NE from 1 mile west of Swanson to 3 miles west of Daggett with a path of 10 miles and width of a 150 yards. Trees, barns, and storage sheds were damaged. The end of a house roof was lifted several inches and set back down. A poultry building was destroyed. A car and garage were crushed by a tree. F1 to locally F3 damage was with this tornado and caused 0,000 worth of property damage. The second tornado had a path of 12 miles and 80 yards of width with F2 damage. This moved NE from 1 mile NW of Faithorn to near Hermansville, destroying a barn and several other small buildings causing 0,000 worth of property damage.

    1998 - Strong thunderstorm winds downed trees between Ironwood, Bessemer, and Wakefield in the early morning. The downed trees damaged a pickup truck in Ironwood and a sport utility vehicle in Wakefield causing ,000 in property damage.

    2006 - Thunderstorms produced heavy rain and minor flooding over portions of south central Upper Michigan in the morning. Rainfall amounts from one and a half to three inches were reported over portions of Iron, Dickinson, Menominee and Delta Counties.     2012 - Afternoon high temperatures soared to 95° in Detroit and 93° in Flint, both all-time records for the month of May. Muskegon observed a daily record high temperature of 89°. A cold front moving through a warm and unstable airmass produced isolated severe thunderstorms over south central Upper Michigan in the afternoon. The spotter seven miles southwest of Munising measured 1.50 inches of rain from a thunderstorm in 40 minutes. The spotter near Schaeffer reported trees greater than five inches in diameter down across his yard. Power oakley cheap lines and trees were reported down across the railroad tracks in Menominee. Emergency services were activated for the area.

    2013 - Numerous thunderstorms spawned six confirmed tornadoes in Shiawassee and Genesee Counties between the hours of 8:30 and 10:30 pm. Storm surveys revealed 2 EF0, 2 EF1, and 2 EF2 tornadoes had occurred in addition to sporadic wind damage. The damage included numerous snapped trees, lost roofs, and a destroyed barn. The most significant damage occurred a few miles east of Grand Blanc near the intersection of Hegel and Gale Roads, where a house was nearly destroyed in addition to a garage and external storage facilities.
